Homeowners protest illegally subdivided, rented houses near Stony Brook University

STONY BROOK – Angry homeowners near Stony Brook University voiced their concerns Wednesday night about houses being bought and rented to students.

Nearly 200 people filled the auditorium at W.S. Mount Elementary School to discuss the issue facing their community. The meeting was organized by Stony Brook Concerned Homeowners, a group dedicated to maintaining the integrity of housing near campus.

Bruce Sander, the group’s president, says landlords are buying homes, illegally subdividing them into multiple apartments and then renting them to local college students.
