Boarding houses focus of Port Jeff public hearing on rental permits

Residents sounded off Monday night on a proposed code that would institute a residential rental permit system in the village and again aired their grievances with illegal apartments and boarding houses in their neighborhoods.

The code would forbid rental occupancy — whether in an apartment or a single-family home — without the owner first getting a building department permit, and says a housing unit not occupied by the legal owner would “be presumed to be rented for a fee.
