Three Village residents rally for petition opposing illegal rentals

A group of Three Village homeowners on Wednesday evening presented a petition that would halt new rental registration permits in the area until the Town of Brookhaven implements a substantial overhaul to its rental licensing system.

The 900-plus member group, Stony Brook Concerned Homeowners, organized earlier this year to combat overpopulated boarding houses run by “unscrupulous landlords,” according to its website, stonybrookconcernedhomeowners.org. Such houses, inhabited mostly by Stony Brook University students in excess of the four unrelated individuals town code allows in a single-family home, are unsafe for the renters and negatively impact quality of life for neighbors, the group says.
